all bassoonists must
confront the fact that the bassoon literature is limited and does
not include many works by the great masters. As a probing musician,
I am therefore always interested in expanding the bassoon repertory,
and in response, have comissioned many new works. As I was
researching repertory to record for this album, I turned to some of
the greatest composers in history: J. S. Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and
Schumann, none of wich wrote sonatas for bassoon and piano. Like
many musicians throughout history who have transcribed works from
other instruments for their own, I have chosen to creat my own
transcriptions of the great works featured on this disc. These four
pieces were chosen because they allow the bassoon's innate melodic
voice and deep resonance to be fully expressed, while at the same
time providing ample oportunity to hear this instrument's huge range
and rich and vibrant tonal palette.

"...Ben has such a gorgeous sound, such impeccable technique, and such sensitive musicality; that is a real pleasure to recommend this album very strongly to all of you!." Ronald Klimko, IDRS Journal |

"Coelho's program is an international affair that shows the range of colors and character that the bassoon can explore in tandem with string colleagues. His playing is unfailingly sonorous, expressive and alert, and he champions the pieces on this recording as if the believed in them withaout reservation". Donald Rosenberg, the Gramaphone |

"Coelho is fantastic. His sound is brilliant, resonant, and strong, and he has a warm tone that blends superbly with the strings". Schwartz, American Record Guide. |
